How To Make Money Online | Link Relevancy Surprize

You all heard it said before that the best kind of links, among other criteria are relevant links. That is to say links that come from sites that have content relevant to yours, weigh more heavily than just plain old links coming from random sites. Is this true?  Good linking looks natural right?  You don’t want to anchor the same keyword ‘too much’ and have your link structure look contrived and unnatural do you?

How many times have you heard ‘experts’ proclaiming this to be incontrovertible truth? I think it may be true a certain extent however I have reservations about the implications. In other words I believe that links from non relevant sites can be much more effective than most seo’s would imagine. I can prove and I have an example to offer. It’s only one example out of hundreds  that I’ve personally analyzed but it clearly illustrates my point.

I’ve stated before that I don’t believe there is a white hat or black hat seo methodology. I don’t believe the two perceived methodologies are mutually exclusive of one another either. I simply feel that seo, holistically speaking, is ultimately comprised of a set of techniques that have one common goal…increased rankings in the serps.

I see a lot of so called white hat seo’s who offer their services for astronomical amounts of money. I’m talking like 10,000 for a site analysis. Just google “link building services” or “seo services” and find a site ballsy enough to print it’s fees. It’s absolutely fucking crazy!!

Now, in order for these overpriced fat cat wannabe guru’s to protect their income they spread misinformation. Scare tactics. They don’t want you to figure out how simple it really is to achieve high ranking otherwise they will be out of the cushiest job of their lives!

I see all this criteria listed in the service packages offered at top seo services companies that really don’t mean shit. They do everything a certain way so as “not to set of a spam filter in google which could get you banned” and they want you to think that if you don’t know what you are doing then you will hurt your site when you try to promote it. They want you to believe that you need a “real” expert who knows how to avoid setting of spam flags. “Don’t get too many links at once…” or “Get links from different ip addresses or google will discover your site and ban you” —”We beg our friends in high places for RELEVANT links” They warn, “Beware of spammy tactics such as link spamming and the gathering of links from bad neighborhoods”

Scare tactics. We know what the popular consensus is regarding ethical seo, links from different ip’s, duplicate content and ‘bad neighborhoods but what does Google think? Does google think like a white hat or does google think like a search engine? The proof is in the pudding…check this out.

The best way to learn what google likes and what google doesn’t like is to examine top ranking sites and see what they did to achieve that ranking. I have an interesting little case study here. I was researching a niche that I’m going to move into and what did I find at the very top? This site:

hxxp://www.discountbathroomvanities.com/

Change the hxxp to http and paste it to your browser so we can examine this site.

AH, What do We Have Here? Hmmm?

First of all this site ranks number one as of Aug 21, 2008 for Discount Bathroom Vanities. This gets about 5000 searches per month and with a modifier like “discount” you can bet the traffic is pretty targeted and converting well.

This site is quite pretty and looks as white hat as could be. See the picture of the girl you call for that added trust factor? Nice. But like lots of things that look nice and clean on the outside there is a much darker side to this site. Let’s have a look at the backlinks shall we?

I use a program called SEO ELite to do all my dirty work. If you don’t have this software you better get it because it enables you to peep inside the sausage factory and see what is REALLY going on.

First of all this site has a very unnatural link profile. I say unnatural because all the links are super targeted to the anchor text.

As you can see from the snap shot I took from seo elite, our number one ranking site has 127 links from the same ip address and without varying the anchor text at all. This is supposed to be really bad link building. All of the so called experts warn against this sort of thing but what do we see here? We see that google doesn’t think like a white hat but more like a search engine.

Let’s dig a little deeper and see what we have. Let’s click on one of these links that come from the same ip. Here’s one: hxxp://www.hello-search.com/

You have to put that in your browser and check it out to believe it. This is TOTAL spam!!! In fact, everyone of the links coming from this ip (all 127 of them) have the exact same layout and content…and links. This page is nothing but a monetized spam links page. It has gambling and sex, penis enlargement…you name it.

So let’s take a step back and think about this. A site is ranking number one in google and has a totally artificial link profile. More than half the links that helped it achieve that number one ranking are “LOW QUALITY SPAM LINKS FROM A BAD BAD NEIGHBORHOOD” –yet the site ranks number one. None of these links come from pages that have anything to do with bathroom vanities or home improvement. To add insult to injury these spammy links are all duplicate in content and layout.

So you have duplicate content, irrelevant links, bad neighborhood, same ip’s, no variance in anchor text…and a pretty little site. What would the guys who charge BIG FUCKING MONEY (eric ward and the likes) say about this?

Probably that it’s not a long term strategy…but that remains to be seen doesn’t it? All I know is Google judged this site and it’s link profile to be good enough for a number one ranking…shit links and all.

It’s been said before and I’ll say it again: “A link is a link”

By the way, I’ve found hundreds of sites just like this ranking in top positions….and some have been there for years. But if you don’t do your own homework like I did then you’ll only believe what the ‘experts’ are telling you.

This guy probably spent no more than a single day promoting this site. Just autopost your links to 127 blogs in your network. Do a link exhange and a bit of comment spam and you’re finished. Just gather the anchored links and move on knowing full well that when google finally indexes all of your links, you’ll out link the other guys and take position one.

Guys, if you are not promoting your new sites from start to finish in a day or two you are either targeting a super competitive niche (credit cards) or you are doing something wrong. And God help you if you are sitting there in your computer chair writing ‘great content’ for your readers hoping to make money.

Get your links and move on.
